Easy, Cheap Homemade Taco Seasoning

Taco seasoning seems to be something that we all run out of when we need it the most. Luckily, you can make it easily using ingredients you probably already have in your spice rack.

You’ll need:
4 tsp chili powder
3 tsp cumin
2 tsp salt
2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp red chili flakes

You can adjust the measurements to make a bunch at once for storage.

  1. I for one, love nightshades and I can’t get enough of them. I will try to eat as many nightshades as possible. You name it: capsicums, potatoes, eggplants, tomatoes, chillies… I feel deeply sorry for those who apparently restrict them from their diet on the basis of some ill-informed theory.

  2. Please remove this. Nightshades include both Chili peppers and Paprika! The only ingredients you would be able to use on this recipe are cumin, salt and black pepper.

  3. Not sure where all this nightshade talk is coming from, and from where it needs to be “removed”. Did I accidently mark it as nightshade free on chowstalker? I just checked and it’s not labeled as “nightshade free”.

@Cavegrl, are onions, garlic and oregano nightshades? Those should be fine in a nightshade-free diet as well, as far as I know.

    1. Russ,
Sorry my original post was unclear. Yes, it was labeled under the nightshade-free in chowstalker. Now it’s not under that listing, weird. I would think I was crazy, but apparently Cavegrl saw it too.

      Giang,
I don’t have a problem with nightshades, but my co-worker does. We know because she was doing the whole 30 without nightshades and then trialed some tomatoes and had a reaction to them. We’ll be trialing her on other nightshades after this month to see if she has a reaction to all or just tomatoes. Please don’t dismiss people’s reactions to nightshades just because you are able to tolerate them.

  4. I just wanted to share with you how much I love this seasoning mix! I have been using it exclusively for a year or so (could be longer, lol!). Time to make another batch because I ran out! I always increase the recipe because I use it so often. I keep a jar of it by the stove. It’s almost as used as salt, pepper and crushed red peppers! My boys love it too! Thank you for this taco seasoning!

  5. Yeah this is THE DOPE for taco seasoning. I’m going to try it as a rub for chicken legs, too. That video of your boy chomping them down made me curious :) Thank you!
